Apparently, the dogs in the painting look remarkably like the Carolina dogs of today.

It has been well documented that dogs and horses of past have been bred to assist us in various ways whether it be pack dog, work horse, hunter or herder. There is no doubt that they have value and have contributed to society in many ways.

The cat however is a very interesting animal indeed. I have yet to see a cat that can herd, or help with the hunt or carry supplies on their backs for us. The cat is strictly a companion to us, that is if they decide to allow you to be graced with their presence. Most cats still have that strong hunting urge as evidenced by your cats offering of that bird he just caught or mouse he brings to you. Most cats get attached to an area that they claim as their own. Some cats get very attached to the people who love them but as a general rule I think the cat feels he is the one who rules and he is allowing you to care for him. Still, we love them.

Horses are a special breed and have a tremendous ability to assist us in ways as only the horse can. Horses have been our mode of transportation much longer than our current ways of getting around. They are to me of such beauty, grace, and power and I always think of them in that way much more than an animal that works for us. They are spectacular.

Dogs however are by far the most domesticated of all animals. They not only help us but they are so genuinely attached to people and their antics are a constant source of pleasure to us. Just look at children or elderly people in an old folks home. If a child finds a stray dog they will surely beg you to allow them to keep the dog. If you take a dog into an old folks home you can see the dog respond happily around them and the smiles on peoples faces are a joy to see.

I had a Springer Spaniel when I was younger and he was the funniest, most easy- going dog around. He was unusual in that he had a very special relationship with our guinea pig. We had the best time watching these two at play. It was the same every day. The guinea pig would wait at the hallway entrance and would stay there until the dog noticed. Then the chase was on! The dog would bark and chase him all the way down the hall. The guinea pig at the last minute would veer to the left and run into the bedroom and go under the bed. The dog was big and somewhat clumsy and would never be able to slow down in time and he’d crash into the wall, get up and then go put his nose under the bed and bark. They would do this four or five times in a row and then curl up together and sleep. Those two made us laugh. It was great!

As animal lovers, we also can adorn our walls with prints and motivational posters of them. They also make great gifts.

We love our animals, as it should be. Be kind and take well care of them.

About the Author: Willie is a freelance writer, researcher and artist. Thanks very much for reading this far. The famous
Cape May lighthouse has been guiding ships since the mid
1800's, and is a national favorite. Our ceramic lighthouse
tiles pay tribute to this part of our history.

6) Polar Bear Tile

The king of the icy, arctic world fits cozily into any home, and seems
especially favored by those who love the arts and crafts of
North America's native peoples. The artists who paint
these have truly captured the wonder and mystery of the
coral reef and deep sea, and we are not at all surprised
that this line of tiles is so popular.

When it comes to home decor, every person's style is as unique
as the individual themselves. Chippy paint furniture, whimsical beach themed designs and easy to care for fabrics make this a perfect choice for the family room.

Regardless of your current decor you can get the cottage style in your family room with a few simple changes, like new flooring, accessories and slipcovers for the furniture. When redecorating, especially if you have a tight budget, you want to think about inexpensive changes that make a big impact such as wall paint and decorative accessories.

What's on your floor can add to the design theme, but if new floors aren't in the budget for your family room then work with what you have by covering them with area rugs that have a cottage style or a sisal rug if you are going for a more contemporary feel. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford new floors, you might consider light stained wood and soften it up a bit with area rugs.

Decorative accessories are important to pulling your coastal cottage style design together. Concentrate on buying pillows, wall art and knick knacks, in colors that remind you of the coast - tans, whites and blues work well with this theme. You'll be amazed at how easy and cheap it is, and what a huge difference these changes make! Be certain to include lots of sea shells in shallow bowls (you can even add in some beach sand!) as well as plants and you might even try certain chippy painted items like old newel posts or porch posts to add some punch to your family room. Additional touches like nautical themed pieces can add a unique touch. The most important change to consider when decorating your family room with a coastal cottage style décor interior design is your wall paint. For this style the room colors make a big difference - you should consider using soft muted tans and whites either in your wall color or your accessories. Try using a paint in light colors like white, light yellow and light blue on the walls, or use a simple beach themed stencil. If you want a New England look, go for wainscoting halfway up the walls.

It's not critical that you have matching furniture but the family room should have a variety of pieces that are overstuffed and comfortable and sport fabrics that are easy to clean. Slipcovers go great with this informal cottage style. To really showcase this style, try pieces with chippy paint in white, light green or light blue. Lighting is critical in most rooms and the family room is no exception. To match your cottage style décor, you might want to look at light fixtures in terms of both style and type. While you will be going for a cottage design, you would want to take a look at installing overhead ceiling fans in a white finish or using nautical themed hanging lights or simple chandeliers. Try clear glass lamps filled with sea shells for the side tables but try to shy away from anything which is heavy or dark lighting. An important area that is frequently ignored when decorating your house is the wall space. Even the ugliest walls can be smashing by using decorative wall art and accessories. Try applying watercolors of the seaside or floral prints in chippy white frames to your family room walls to enhance the comfy feeling of your cottage decorating style.

Attaining a fabulous coastal cottage look in your family room can be as basic as just buying new decorative accessories or as involved as doing a total room remake. Either way, working on the details and coordinating your furniture and decorative accessories will help you coordinate a magnificent new cottage style décor look that will add comfort as well as style!

About the Author
Lee Dobbins writes for DecoratingHowTo.com where you can learn about more decorating styles for your home.

Some other coastal decorating ideas: Add a nautical tile, Nautical Wood Piling Candles, Fish Net, all these items can add to your coastal theme. Whether you choose a six or twelve inch high border edging, or stand a section of post and rail garden fencing in the center of a sweep of lawn, garden fencing can add a beautiful accent to your landscaping.

Wood lattice makes attractive garden fencing that affords some privacy while allowing glimpses of the garden. Lattice boards set into a wooden privacy fence add a whole new design dimension to the frontage of your garden. A single width of lattice fencing can provide a screen or windbreak, and support for any climbing vines.

Set a lattice panel at the edge of the garden nearest the house and train morning glories to climb it to provide a scenery wall outside a kitchen or bedroom window, or create a simple arbor with two full height lattice panels set six to eight feet apart. Use thick garden twine to create a 'bridge' for vines to climb across and form a living 'roof'.

Border edging is another extremely versatile garden fencing option. Think outside the perimeter. You can use wire garden fencing to create smaller accents within a garden plot, or outline one corner or end of a garden with cast iron border edging.

Cedar shakes or redwood blocks can be used to create curved borders for slightly raised garden beds, or serve as a backdrop over which to spill indigo lobelia or white alyssum. Create a zigzag border of decorative low picket garden fencing and plant zinnias or marigolds in the V-shaped 'teeth' for a unique look.

Garden fencing can be used to create a beautiful background for patio dining. Choose a metal trellis and install it just off the patio edge behind the table and dining set. Twine climbing roses up over it to create an accent that defines the edge of the patio and creates an elegant, tasteful accent to your patio and garden at the same time.

Wrought-iron or cast-iron fences tend to be ornate, which suits more formal, historic houses, such as Victorians, or high-end urban homes. Today, similar styles are available in powder-coated steel, anodized aluminum or composite materials that are much more affordable and easier to maintain.

Stone fences, which are the oldest known type of fencing, make great garden walls or boundary markers around traditional homes, such as Colonials and Cape Cods, when built with native stone. Dry-stacked walls stay together with the help of gravity and friction.

The picket fence, a low, decorative style used to define property rather than secure it, is a universally popular style flexible enough to work with almost any home. There are many variations on the picket fence, including the Federal style, which features scalloped pickets and decorative finials.

About the Author: There are several reasons for putting up a garden fence: privacy, containment or architectural and aesthetic enhancement of your yard, to name a few.

Source: www.isnare.com

Another source for a Garden Fence is: Garden Accessories

Lattice extension panels shown with a garden arbor
<right>

Selecting the Right Patio Furniture Cushions

Selecting The Right Patio Furniture Cushions
By John Mclain

The right patio furniture cushions can fill you with a sense of luxurious living. Whether you have a wrought iron, wicker, teak or plastic furniture set, having the right cushions can make or break your backyard or sunroom. Having durable, appealing fabric on the outside should be matched with long-lasting cushions.

The key to long-lasting patio furniture cushions is not just the density or quality of the foam itself, but the drainable quality of it. Cushions that will inevitably sit in the rain from time to time should have an open cell structure. This guarantees that the water passes through the cushion and out through the fabric. Getting cushions that do not trap the water inside of them will outlast ones that end up with internal moisture which could lead to rotting. Quality cushions are often made of layers of polyester fill which is also called polyfill.

Another way to keep the moisture out is to have the right fabric on the outside. Except for wrapping your cushions in plain old garbage bags, which no one will, you might be able to get some other fabrics that will be equally successful in keeping the water out and the firmness in. Many of the fabrics used for patio furniture cushions are made to feel like plush cotton. Look for solution-dyed acrylic to get long-lasting cushions for your outdoor set. This kind of fabric is specifically designed to be all-weather, comfortable and soft. The sun can often play a mischievous role on outdoor cushions. A Teflon coating is often applied at the factory to keep the colors of patio furniture cushions vibrant and alive.

Your cushions should also include some Dacron wrap. This adds the extra fullness and shape to cushions which makes them look even more appealing for some spring, summer or fall lounging. Rather than having a simple, square piece of foam inside your cushion, you have a piece that has been wrapped completely in the soft edges of Dacron. Some cushions will not say whether they include this extra layer, but you can often tell just by looking at the shape.

Knowing the inside and out of picking out patio furniture cushions can help you find the ones that will hopefully last for years. Picking out the patterns of your cushions will be the fun part. Stripes are always festive for the outdoors, with floral patterns taking a close lead. Of course, there is nothing wrong with going with solid colors. If you have an intricate wrought iron set, or many pieces, in a setting with tons of flowers and plants, then going for a simple cushion will let the eyes enjoy the scenery a little more. Luckily, most patio cushions are designed to fit any set, whether it is teak, iron or plastic resin, so one does not have to worry that they have found the perfect pattern, but not know if it will fit. Look for quality polyfills, UV-resistant coatings and comfortable softness and you can have a complete sanctuary for outside of your home.

About the Author: Cushionsrus is a site specializing in cushions, from chair cushions, patio furniture cushions, to rocking chair cushions and beyond.

Source: www.isnare.com

Another source for Cushions is: Cushions for your Outdoor Furniture

Cushions
<right>

How to Buy a Porch Swing

How To Buy A Porch Swing
By Kevin Snook

The Porch Swing is enjoying a surge in popularity thanks to the latest Home & Garden trend towards building "Garden Rooms". Patio Furniture Retailers have responded by flooding the market with so many options that making a choice can be a daunting task. Here are some factors that you should consider to help you make the best Porch Swing choice for you:

Porch Swings are now made from a wide range of building materials. The most common are wood and wicker. Popular woods used are cedar, teak, pine, maple, and oak.

The materials vary greatly in terms of strenth and durability. While Oak is the strongest, it also tend to be very heavy. Cedar offers the greatest strength to lightest weight ratio. It is very light and has 80% the strength of oak. Cedar also has natural properties that enable the wood to resist rot and decay. In addition, it won't bow or sag, crack or chip making it one of Outdoor Furniture's most desired building materials. Pine is lightweight and relatively inexpensive but is soft and dents and cracks easily. The durability of wicker varies depending on the materials used to make the wicker.

Porch Swing physical features like seat depth, angle of the back and space between the slats, length of the seat, and joint construction can vary widely. Seat depth can range from 18 to 36 Inches. There is no one correct depth. It's a personal choice based on comfort.

For maximal comfort, the back of the Swing should be slightly tilted. And there should be some space between the slats to allow air to circulate.

Swings can generally hold one to three people depending on the length of the seat. But keep in mind that the longer the seat the heavier the supports that will be required. Generally, a Porch Swing that seats two comfortably is recommended.

Finally, the functional nature of Porch Swings requires that the joints be screwed or bolted together. Joints that are nailed together are not recommended as a Porch Swing is a functional peice of and the nails will come loose with use.

Another factor to consider is whether to buy a finished or unfinished Porch Swing. Porch Swings are now available in a variety of finishes. Some are stained, others painted in colors ranging from white to a rainbow of multiple colors. Many Porch Swings are also unfinished. The unfinished Porch Swings provide the most options later and some can be left to age naturally without finishing. Unfinished Cedar, for example, is "Outdoor ready". No finishing is required. An unfinshed Patio Furniture Porch Swing also leaves lots of "dress up" options. While it might be difficult to find cushions to match muti-colored Porch Swings, by starting with an unfinished Outdoor Furniture swing, you can pick the stain or paint to match the cushion!

Installion is another important consideration. If you have a covered Porch with exposed joists, your installation job is automatically made easier. However, your options re: length and weight of the Porch Swing may be limited. If you intend on building your own Porch Swing support for the garden or an uncovered porch, more options are open to you as you can build the support according to the weight and length of the Porch Swing.

By considering the building material, physical features, the finish, and your particular installation requirements in advance, your task of choosing the Porch Swing that is best for you will be much easier. Finding the prefect gift to give often takes a lot of time and money. If you are in need of a gift for an individual who loves the outdoors then you should consider purchasing them an Adirondack chair.

Adirondack chairs were first developed in New York state in the early 1900ís. Adirondack chairs are most commonly used as outdoor furniture; however, an Adirondack chair can also be used inside. An Adirondack chair is often a valuable and beautiful piece of furniture that would make a gift for just about any outdoor lover. If you are interested in purchasing an Adirondack chair as a gift there are a number of options for you to consider.

Adirondack chairs are generally made form high quality wood; however, other chairs are made from recycled wood pieces. If you are interested in purchasing a high quality Adirondack chair you should be prepared to pay more money for it. These types of quality Adirondack chairs are worth the extra money because they tend to last longer and stay in better condition.

Traditional Adirondack chairs have a slanted back, oversized armrests, and are stationary; however, Adirondack chairs have changed in a number of ways since they were first developed. It is now possible to purchase an Adirondack chair that rocks, inclines, and folds up. Adirondack chairs can come in a traditional wood color or they can be stained or painted a particular color. With the large selection of Adirondack chairs it is highly likely that you will be able to find the perfect Adirondack chair style for someone that you know.

Once you have made the decision to give an Adirondack chair as a gift you will need to find an individual or store who sells them. Since Adirondack chairs are typically handcrafted furniture it is likely that an independent individual may be making and selling them. If you do not know anyone who makes them or would prefer to make your purchase from a functioning business you have a number of choices to choose from. Adirondack chairs can be purchased from a general furniture store, a store specializing in Adirondack furniture, or online.

If you are interested in having a larger selection of Adirondack chairs to choose from you may want to consider shopping at a store that specializes in Adirondack furniture or online. Although traditional furniture stores are likely to have a selection of Adirondack chairs their selection may not be as large as online stores or Adirondack furniture stores. You can use your local phone book to find an Adirondack furniture store in your area. If you are interested in shopping online you can do a general internet search of Adirondack chairs or visit an online business directory.

Adirondack chairs are high quality pieces of furniture that work great for outdoor or indoor use. For a valuable gift that can be used for years and years to come purchased your friend, relative, or loved one an Adirondack chair today.

About the Author: Aiken Smith is a writer for Adirondack Chair Works where you can find http://www.adirondackchairworks.com the adirondack chair that fits your lifestyle.

Source: www.isnare.com

Another source for Adirondack Chairs is: Adirondack Chairs

Oversized Adirondack Chair
<right>

Adding Beauty to Your Garden with An Arbor

Adding Beauty To Your Garden With An Arbor
By Paul Graham

Garden arbors are set up as shaded places in home gardens or public parks where one can relax and rest. These open frameworks are typically made of latticework or rustic work, functioning also as a trellis for climbing or creeping plants. Arbors can also be constructed for decks or patios. Today's garden arbors were not the first attempt to enhance the beauty of gardens. In the 400s B.C. and A.D. 400's, elaborate courtyards were a hallmark of many Roman homes. Landscape architecture was also given a premium in Japanese gardens (A.D. 500's) and Persian gardens (A.D.200's-600's). Beauty was also a priority for civic plazas and hillside estates for Italians in the 1400's-1500's. City gardens and majestic palaces were the highlight of France during the 1600's and 1700's, while country estates with a natural look were the main theme followed by English designers in the 1800's.

1. Landscape Architecture

For a good number of these early country estates and gardens, designers were known as landscape gardeners. An American - Frederick Law Olmsted - was the first to use 'landscape architect'. He indicated this title when he approved design plans for Manhattan's Central Park in New York City with Calvert Vaux as his partner in the 1850's. Landsape architecture is not limited to major projects. Some homeowners tap the services of professionals to add beauty to their gardens. However, others now feel confident in do-it-yourself projects as a cost-effective alternative to make their gardens beautiful.

2. Use Quality Materials

Creating a small garden arbor is an easy task, with costs becoming significantly less if the homeowner is patient enough to shop around and compare prices, particularly for pressure-treated lumber. Other items that may vary slightly across discount stores in price terms are deck screws, scrap lumber, crushed stone or gravel, washers, bolts and nuts. The same principles apply to building larger arbors, although some ideas and items would tend to increase in scale. As an example, using two posts for a small arbor may mean using four posts for a large one, as a bigger arbor would need greater support for strength and stability, and also to enhance alignment.

3. Designing a Garden Arbor: Some Do-It-Yourself Fundamentals

- To stabilize the arbor, the homeowner should have the main posts of the structure sunk into concrete poured into holes below the garden's ground level.

- The carpenter's level is used to determine if the posts stand at equal heights. The tool is also used to establish plumbness, or if the posts are vertically 'level.'

- Wooden crosspieces in varying measurements can be attached perpendicular to the posts for further support.

- Since some rejects still make their way to lumber stores, one should be patient enough to sort through many boards until a good quality board is found.

- Buyers should remember that conventional measurements are not exact: a 4 by 4 may actually measure 3.5 by 3.5, while 2 by 4 may measure 1.5 by 3.5.

- The same consideration for post height must also be given, as part of the arbor posts will be underground. Galvanized post anchors is one option homeowners have if they intends to make use of the post's full height - or have all posts above ground level - for their garden.

4. Tools For Do-It-Yourself Projects

These will actually cost a lot more if one does not have the necessary tools at home for building garden arbors.

- Circular saw or handsaw

- Stepladder

- Wheelbarrow

- Hammer

- Wrench

- Spade bit

- Garden hose

- Carpenter's level

- Shovel

- Drill

- File

- Wood chisel

5. Building Tips

- Arbor boards can already be pre-drilled and pre-cut as a time-saving step.

- The wooden crosspieces can be designed at the ends. Patterns can be drawn using a pencil and later cut using a jigsaw.

Source: www.isnare.com

Great article!

New England Deluxe Arbor
<right>
For those of you who want to buy an arbor aleady made check this link out: Arbors-Many Designs and Prices to suit every budget

New Tiles Are in!

What a busy day in the shop today! Then she softened her voice until it was a little insinuating: "He only wants to deliver the mail."

It is a message that many of her listeners need to hear. Ms. Harris is a D.J. on DogCatRadio.com, a new Internet radio station for pets. Now dogs, cats, hamsters and parrots can keep the anxiety, the loneliness, the restlessness at bay while their owners are out. It is radio just for them, live 17 hours a day, 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time, and podcast for the rest of the 24 hours.

Those who listen to DogCatRadio will find that there is generally an animal motif to the playlist, like "Hound Dog": "You ain't nothin' but a hound dogcryin' all the time."

This Elvis song is a frequent request from listeners (presumably the owners), as are the Baha Men, singing: "Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof)."

And Dionne Warwick is also popular, especially her soothing song "That's What Friends Are For": "Keep smiling, keep shining,/Knowing you can always count on me."

Since many pets are apparently bilingual, DogCatRadio also has a "Spanish Hour," 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific time daily, with Hispanic commentary and music, like Luis Miguel's "No Sé Tú": DogCatRadio.com was started last June by Adrian Martinez, who is also president of Marusa records, an independent record label in Los Angeles. He runs the station out of a customized RV parked in his office lot in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles.

WOOF FM

AP
"Put down the chew toys and yarn and get ready for another non-stop, commercial free pet rock block."

· Have a song Fido's barking to hear? This is going to be placed in an ad for the European market.

They wanted to use some of our Large Adirondack Chairs, Tables, Stools and Benches!

The pictures were taken at Race Point Beach, Cape Cod, MA and featured kids playing on the beach.

We can't wait to see the pics!

How we got started.

Cape Cod Treasure Chest began by combining a father-daughter team, Donald Perry and his daughter Dawn.

Donald Perry's Wood Products has been in business for over 30 years. He has built a reputation for building quality, reliable and durable products.

Dawn Perry has been in the corporate business world for many years and has always enjoyed working with her father in his wood shop.

By linking both of our talents we decided to expand our line to include quality products made by others. Many people over the years have been visiting our shop in N Truro and have expressed interest in custom pieces. Due to the volume of work with custom work and our traditional line we decided to expand our line to include other gift items. All items are inspected for quality.

We hope you enjoy our website and all the fine products we offer. Please drop by our shop in North Truro, MA. We have many items such as picnic tables, trash bins, Adirondack Chairs and Truro Chairs that are available at our shop only.

If you have any questions or comments about our site feel free to email us.

Visit our website CapeCodTreasureChest.com
